Traditional Indications
The source associates the formula with depletion of qi and blood, generalized weakness, systemic numbness or weakness, infertility attributed to Kidney deficiency, excessive thirst, dribbling urination, seminal emission, uterine bleeding or vaginal discharge, scrofulous swellings, and hemorrhoidal swelling. Its notes relate these patterns to insufficiency of qi and blood, decline of Kidney essence, disharmony of water and fire, failure of communication between the Heart and Kidneys, or disorder of nutritive blood.
Preparation & Administration
Large red and white He Shou Wu are used at one jin each, peeled, sliced, mixed with black soybeans, and processed through nine steaming-and-drying cycles. Bai Fu Ling is mixed with milk; Niu Xi is soaked in wine and steamed with He Shou Wu during cycles seven through nine; Dang Gui is washed with wine; Gou Qi Zi is soaked in wine; and Tu Si Zi is soaked in wine and steamed. These five ingredients are each listed at half a jin. Po Gu Zhi is stir-fried with black sesame and used at four liang (approximately 150 g). The historical jin quantities are retained without gram conversion. The medicines are formed into honey pills and taken with salted water or wine; the text also instructs avoiding iron utensils.
Formula Rationale
He Shou Wu serves as the chief ingredient to secure essence and qi while supporting the Liver and Kidneys. Fu Ling connects the Heart and Kidneys and drains dampness from the Spleen. Niu Xi strengthens the sinews and bones and supports the lower burner. Dang Gui nourishes blood, Gou Qi Zi enriches the water aspect, Tu Si Zi supports the three yin channels and defensive qi, and Po Gu Zhi warms the life-gate fire and secures essence. The source warns that Liuwei Wan and Qibao Meiran Dan have different chief ingredients and should not be casually merged.
